Elective and emergency surgery clashed today. Always dreadful to cancel cases when people wait so long for operations but today another surgeon’s patient became very sick shockingly quickly. There was no choice other than to perform emergency surgery to fix things. Unfortunately in a system stretched to the limits something had to give. It’s an awful feeling and it doesn’t get any easier, telling people who have organised their lives to come to hospital that their operation isn’t going to happen today. The disappointment is palpable. Not a great day.
