Inefficiency

How to change a system that thrives on inefficiency? A question I have been pondering long and hard this week. Grand old lady NHS so desperately needs to evolve and become more efficient but just as Darwin discovered people fear evolution. But where there’s a will there’s a way. I love the old dear but she’s in need of a nip and a tuck. All I have to figure out now is how to make her hearing-aid work!!

Satisfied exhaustion

After fourteen long hours of operating happy for a chance to put my feet up. A great day and a pleasure as always to work with my team at Brighton Nuffield. A beautiful environment to operate in. The best surroundings will always lead to the best outcomes and some truly excellent results were achieved. It wasn’t a day for speed but slow and steady definitely won this race. Apologies once again to my team for the horribly late finish I hope everyone’s dinner wasn’t in the dog!! Same again next week?

Here’s to the weekend

Fun operating with a colleague today, a very challenging case went perfectly with great teamwork. Stress free operating compared to yesterday! Thank goodness yesterday’s patient is doing well. Time to relax for a few days.

Looking forward to celebrating Joe & Louise’s big day with them tomorrow. Congratulations to the happy couple.

I hope everyone has a great bank holiday.

What a day!

Elective and emergency surgery clashed today. Always dreadful to cancel cases when people wait so long for operations but today another surgeon’s patient became very sick shockingly quickly. There was no choice other than to perform emergency surgery to fix things. Unfortunately in a system stretched to the limits something had to give. It’s an awful feeling and it doesn’t get any easier, telling people who have organised their lives to come to hospital that their operation isn’t going to happen today. The disappointment is palpable. Not a great day.
